Some Wonderful Winter Walks

The Active Guide, 01 December 2011
There really is no shortage of fantastic winter walks up and down the UK, but to help you on your way, we asked some outdoor experts to give us their recommendations.  They came back with a great variety of walks, from short family strolls to challenging mountain hikes.  Here’s a summary of their suggestions and links to fuller descriptions elsewhere on the site.

1.    A  Wharfedale winter by Jon Gale of Berghaus.  A delightful half day walk that takes in some gorgeous scenery in one of the less frequented of the Yorkshire Dales.
2.    Over the South Downs to Ditchling by HF Holidays.  A perfect six miles long winter’s walk offering panoramic views in England’s newest National Park.
3.    Walking near Alderley Edge by the National Trust.  A beautiful woodland walk set around a dramatic sandstone escarpment in rolling Cheshire farmland.
4.    Helvellyn via Striding Edge by Jon Gale of Berghaus.  A challenging classic route in the Lake District that can be spectacular in winter and lead to a real sense of achievement.
5.    The Shropshire Way by Mark Round of the Camping and Caravanning Club.  Blow away the winter cobwebs with this gentle walk along the Shropshire Way, through the heart of rural Shropshire.
6.    Moor, tarn and cove in Malham by HF Holidays.  This circular walk in the Yorkshire Dales is one you can go back to time and again, taking in waterfalls, crags and a lake.
7.    Tarn Hows by Sarah Howcroft of Rohantime.  This is a short circular walk in the Lake District and is ideal for families who are trying outdoor activities together for the first time.

We hope that the above suggestions appeal to you.  If not (or they aren’t easy to get to), why not use The Active Map to find a suitable and convenient destination?  Winter can transform even very familiar surroundings, so it may be worth returning to somewhere that you have been walking earlier in the year.  There are hundreds of walking locations on the map and if you have another to suggest, it’s easy to add content and you could even win a prize

We have four Berghaus rucksacks, two Petzl Tikkina head torches and two Aladdin Challenger flasks to give away during December.  Add some new content to TAG (e.g. a new activity location or review of an outdoor experience) and you will be entered into the prize draw to win one of these great prizes.

Yes, there is a huge amount of enjoyment to be had in winter walking.  Get prepared, get out there, be safe and enjoy!
